The player is forced to put 2 cards away before the race starts.

Additionally two bonus cards can be taken either before the start or at any other desired time during the race. It is of course recommended to take the bonus cards not before they really give you an advantage. But this is easier said than done.

A lot of players recall the bonus card rule not until their horse is leading close to the finish line, and the last remaining card does not fit to the handicap. You need a great deal of good luck then, to make a save by picking up a suitable value. To avoid this kind of situation prematurely, you should rather foresee it some rounds of cards before.

If you got two cards left from the previous race - alike our prize competition – it can be useful to take the bonus cards already before the race. You can judge the quality of totally 14 cards then, and further more you got two additional cards at you choice during the complete race.

Since the bonus cards are always played additionally, the player needs not put away more of cards than he had kept from the previous race. That makes in our example 2 cards.
